Iran Today

Today Iran still faces cultural differences and problems today. There is still no separation of religion and government as Islam is still the driving religion behind the country. But now the youth of the country is attempting to stand up to the conservative government and liberalize it (everyculture.com). Iran's history has been full of the power struggle between religious and liberal ideas and control of the government. Iran has also begun to urbanize. When ever they can they are expanding their cities and making their architecture more modern to fill up the desert environment the country is in (everyculturue.com). With a youth uprising, the world might see another cultural revolution coming out of Iran in the next decade or so.

Women, Post Revolution

Women were affected greatly by the Islamic Revolution. With the increase in religious control in the government, reforms were made in order to have society reflect certain religious views. Women did not feel like they had any power with the new regime. Women were told to look towards men for guidance, and to know what happens in society (Iranchambers.com). Women went from having power in society, to barely having any. They had to follow everything men said. Education was not encouraged by society, especially not higher education. many colleges became male only in order to deter women from going to college (iranchambers). It seems that women lost all their rights and the equality they had fought for. Women's role in society went from being equal to men to not having much say in society at all.

Post Revolution

A culture will change after a country wide revolution. After the revolution, Iran was in a bit of mess. There was no strong economy, nor government structure. Nor was there a strong military process. After the Shah left,  there were many political parties trying to gain control of the governemnt; every political party from small liberal parties to very Islamic parties (iranchamber.com). Within the justice system, there was also a lot of confusion. The people running the courts were making very controversial decisions that cause a lot of upset with lawyers and human rights activists (iranchamber.com). Even as the country was trying to rebuild, there were revolutions happening against the new government, because there were so many conflicting ideas within the country, causing unrest.

Iran Revolution

Revolutions have the power to change whole generations and countries in a small amount of time. In Iran before 1979, many Iranian people were becoming fed up with the Shah, who was a leader the CIA put into place to spread Western thinking into the government and society. The Shah attempted to modernize the country of Iran, but this was against many conservatives in the country (fsmitha.com). The Shah was exiled from the country and the religious conservatives started to go against his rule and pushing their views back into the government. Before, the people of Iran saw the Shah as a puppet, hurting the country more than helping (fsmitha.com). At the end of the revolution, the government, economy and military were all in a disarray with religious leaders attempting to take control.

Iranian Women's clothes circa 1979

Before the Islamic Revolution, the culture of Iran was extremely different than what it is now. In some ways, before the revolution, Iran was seen as more liberal than conservative as it is seen now. Before, women could walk around as they pleased they were independent. but now, due mostly in leu to cultural and religious standards women must dress a certain way. now they must cover most of their body not allowing any part be exposed to the rest of the world.

Map of Iran and sourrounding countries

Before the Revolution:
When a group of people want to make a change to their culture or country, if they get enough support, they can change history. Before the Islamic Revolution, the country of Iran was pretty different. In the pre-revolution country, there was more of a liberal stance on things, and everyone was equal. Education was encouraged for all those with in society, and higher education was encouraged, even for women it was (opposingviews.com). The Shah, the leader of the country was very western thinking, bringing those ideas to the country, thus the more liberal stances. Within the government, they started going away from the more religious views, but faced opposition from many of the followers of Islam (opposingviews.com). The world of Iran was drastically changed as the Islamic Revolution happened.
